When looking at examples of CD covers I found that the ones that I like the best were very visually interesting. This is perhaps because it allows them to stand out from the run of the mill CD covers, such as the typical pop CDs, with the close-up of a glamorous girl on the front.
All CD covers include the name of the artist and the album, but it is the ones that have the most interesting covers which attract the eye and make the sales.
I particularly like this cover for the Muse album because of the very striking repeated pattern made with the shapes of the shadows. This is very eye catching and I think we could use this idea of a bold pattern in our CD cover. Another thing I notice about this CD cover is that the bold band name and album title still manages to hold it's own against the background. I think we could perhaps use a similar effect on our CD cover through the use of a bright colour against a more neutral coloured background.
Another cover that I found which I really liked was this cover for the single "I'm yours" by Jason Mraz. The thing for me which made this album cover stand out, was the sheer simplicity of it . The bold black outline against the white background is very eye catching. I think in our final products we could combine elements of these two covers by creating a striking pattern but using a bold black outline against a white background.
With the back covers of CDs there is generally not a lot of variation. All back covers have a list of the tracks which occur on he CD. The often have a picture of some kind to make them more visually interesting. The main differences between the back covers of CDs is the layout. Like the back of the Beatles album some layouts are composed vertically with the lyrics on top and the picture at the bottom or vice versa. I quite like this layout as it is slightly more unusual compared to the typical layout of most back covers of CDs which are more similar to the pink floyd album below. The majority of back covers have a horizontal layout, with the list of tracks down one side and then an image (if one is used) down the other side. I think although this design is obviously quite popular it is not as visually interesting as the other layout.
