Research and planning ancilaries

Just as music videos have specific conventions, so do  magazine adverts. There are certain
things which in general all magazine adverts include
  • The name of the band
  • A picture of the artist or of something which appears on the album cover.
  • A miniature of the album cover.
When researching magazine adverts for our project I looked at an example which includes all of these things and a couple of examples which don't include everything to see the
effectiveness of each.

This first advert, for Friendly fires album, I do not feel is entirely effective. It includes the name   of the band, but it does not make it clear what the name of the album is, however due to the
mise-en-scene, such as the location, the bright colours and the costumes used in the picture
it is very eye catching and gives the feeling of summer, which looking at the quote from the
observer is obviously what they wanted to create connotations of in their advert.

This next advert for 'The verve's' single, 'Love is noise' makes it very clear who the band is through the larger writing at the top and then identifies the title of  the single in the smaller writing underneath. In the same way that the other 'Friendly fires' advert was eye catching, so is this, but for a different reason.
The simplicity of this advert means that your attention is immediately drawn to the band name, because it stands out against the lighter shade in the sepia tones and is in the centre, so becomes the centre of focus for the eye. When producing our final magazine adverts, I will try and keep the band name and album name central so as to make it stand out.

In terms of the content included in this magazine advert, this is definitely the best when it comes to fitting in with the conventions.

When creating my magazine advert for my ancillaries I definitely plan to try and use all of these conventions so that the maximum information is passed on to our audience who will be reading the advert.
