When deciding on the narrative of our video I thought it was important to look at the lyrics in order to get an idea of what the song is about. Andrew Goodwin, in his analysis of music video, stated that - in any music video, there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals (with them either illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics).
I will
Lay me down
In a bunker
Underground
I won’t let this happen to my children
Meet the real world coming out of your shell
With white elephants
Sitting ducks
I will
Rise up
Little babies eyes, eyes, eyes, eyes
Little babies eyes, eyes, eyes, eyes
Little babies eyes, eyes, eyes
Looking at the lyrics of the song, there are a lot of connotations with the topic of war. The images created by the lines 'I will, lay me down, in a bunker' are strongly linked with this idea. To reflect the lyrics in our music video, our opening shot is going to be a birds eye view shot, of someone lying on the ground. We are also going to try and reflect the theme of war, by filming parts of our video in a demotlition and construction sight. The rubble and wire fences, will be symbolic of areas of 'no mans land' in the first world war. They will also be reminiscent of bomb reckage.
Another idea which I associated with this video is an idea of going insane. The line, 'meet the real world coming out of your shell,' for me created the idea of someone coming out of 'shell shock'. This made me think that the person is not really sure what is going on in the real world and so made me think about what could be going on in the artists mind. After this thought, we decided to make the video like some kind of nightmare-ish world, where dreams and reality become confused.
In our video we will have some elements which do loosely reflect the lyrics. We will not have shots that specifically illustrate the lyrics, but rather amplify ideas and connotations associated with the lyrics. This will make our video more interesting for an audience as we are not spoonfeeding them the contents of the lyrics, but instead making them think hard about what the lyrics are trying to put across.
Here I have uploaded a youtube recording of the song, to better convey the feeling of the lyrics.
